Modern life is stressful and 40,000 million people have problems sleeping. One stress I recognize and can do something about is something in the air.
Besides wearing an I Can Sleep... Eye Shade, I (Adrien the designer) sleep wearing a Silk Comfort Mask. For this purpose I have three clean masks so I can change if I awaken during the night.
Sometimes I wake up anxious. I have learned to change to a Honeycomb Mask with carbon filter (beside my bed I keep a little box which holds a the sleep mask, a carbon mask and a cotton mask). In 95% of these episodes, with the carbon mask I am able to breathe deeply and comfortably fall back to sleep. The other 5% are clearly related to a business or family problem that needs resolving.
From these episodes I believe there are times when something in the air~~I don't know what the wind has blown in from who knows where~~affects my breathing, makes me anxious and I wake up. Practically speaking, if a mask makes a difference, I use it.
One episode was traceable. About two years ago, a little after midnight I awakened with a splitting headache, very unusual for me. I changed from silk to a carbon mask. With the carbon I was able to breathe deeply and within minutes the headache subsided and I slept well. From the local morning news I learned that around midnight there were five fires fifteen blocks south and southwest of where I live. One fire was at a tire store so the air was acrid with burning rubber. I checked the wind direction. It was blowing our way.
Once in Berkeley, California, a thunder-wind storm was whipping the air. I awakened coughing~~the kind of cough that indicated to me that my asthma was triggered. I was wearing a silk mask so changed to a Honeycomb Mask with carbon filter. It did not relieve my cough. This was scary~~I was groggy from having been awakened and my rescue medication was across the room in my purse. My Organic Cotton mask was by the bed so I tried that. To my great relief, I could breathe with the cotton mask and slept. To this day I don't know the cause and why only the cotton mask worked.
A customer in Montana sleeps in the Cold Weather Mask during the winter~~not because she is cold. She used to have a bloody nose because of the dryness in a heated home. The silk-lined Cold Weather Mask has low resistance and provides just enough humidity so she can sleep comfortably.
